BOWIE: THE CULTURIST REVIEW



To make a culturist critique is to tie an event or person to larger cultural trends. David Bowie (1947-2016) symbolizes the West’s recent progressive cultural apex. After all, he led the charge into gender bending and then married a black Muslim woman. But, these acts stand in stark contrast to the West’s developing tsunami of masculine cultural protectionism.

Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) – the first person to be called a ‘culturist’ practicing ‘culturism,’ – asserted that the West cycled from expansionist, flexible, (progressive) ‘Hellenism’ to contracting, law-abiding, tough, ‘Hebraism.’ The Hellenic periods lack discipline, the Hebraic ones lack ‘sweetness and light.’ In his time, Arnold saw his England as being too Hebraic and France as too Hellenistic.

We in the Alt-Lite / Alt-Right fringe, foresee a coming reckoning that may involve considerable violence. Currently, the West is experiencing a Hellenic peak; soon we will adopt the Hebraic traits of hating foreign cultures, and again accept that successful cultures usually see violence as an honorable duty. Bowie’s death represents the death of the expansionist Hellenic period, and so the dawn of the Hebraic contraction.

Many will say, ‘Good Riddance’ to Bowie and celebrate the death of his spry decadence. And, yet, it behooves us brutal enforcers to remember that for which we fight: Celebrations of individual potential is the Western jewel of great price. Islam remains purely brutal. Asia celebrates conformity to the strictures of the natural order. The West alone celebrates our individual potential, our flexibility of mind and person.

Bowie personified the Western belief in each man having, as he said, the “Potential of a Superman.” Famously, he repeatedly transformed himself. He was a space alien, a rock star, a vaudevillian, a soul singer, and more. He married outside his race and culture. His extreme attack on the limits of identity embodied the Western sense of freedom.

If Alt-Right folks reply that he violated Roman ethics, I would remind them that Nietzsche (1844-1900) gets stereotyped as a Hebraic brute, idolizing “Blonde beasts of pray.” Yet, Nietzsche denigrated unambitious intellects. We need to suspect popular depictions. Bowie was a much more profound artist than the media portrays for the masses.

A review of Bowie’s catalog shows a nearly complete absence of love songs. His music was self-consciously intellectual. ‘The Cygnet Committee’ echoes Edmund Burke by having God argue against the French Revolution. 'The Supermen' visits the loneliness that a Zarathustra character must face. Musically, his absence of references to mundane love in his catalog parallels Nietzsche’s disdain for the merely human.

Bowie’s darkness defied today’s liberal utopia. His “Thin White Duke” character lauding “The European banner,” triumphal crowing about his music as "Genocide” and calling himself the “Fuhrerling” would not pass PC scrutiny today. Even his celebrated Ziggy character was doomed and so spoke to corruptibility, rather than optimism. As Nietzsche should not be blamed for WWII, Bowie cannot take the blame for the shallow sexuality promoted in his name.

Though they married in a church, Bowie married a Muslim. He lived in an era of Hellenism, in which such moves seemed safe. Increasingly, such relationships will provoke violence. The same can be said of his youthful gender-bending. But, this was all congruent with his quite serious searching for an individualistic identity. Confronting our station, as with Hamlet, and probing our potential, as with Nietzsche, are quintessential Western ideals.

We need to reject liberal decadence. Yet, as a culturist strategy, we need to celebrate Western artistry. Yes, the era of contracting Nietzschean brutality, that Arnold’s model predicts, is coming. But, we’ll need inspiration to re-emerge from it. In the darkness, we must not reflexively denounce the uniquely Western bent towards ‘sweetness and light.’ Botticelli, the Church liturgy, and even Bowie’s artistry are examples of culturist potentials for which we must brutally fight.

    How convenient that Bowie just happened to die when those things happened! I'm sure he waited for just the right moment to take a dirt nap.

    1. James, It is interesting to ask if the times make the person or vice versa. I don't think Bowie would have been a big hit in the 1950s. And, if he started now, he might be too dark - the Thin White Duke would be censored. But, I think the gender questioning he started in the US is about petered out (pun intended).

    2. Actually, I was implying that Bowie's death didn't represent anything, except that time was up for him. Now, it may represent those things...to YOU. But I don't think that "History" will record time as before Bowie/after Bowie. As far as I was concerned, Bowie had not actually done anything of any consequence in over 20 years. He had a heart attack in 2004 and cut back his appearances after that. I actually liked Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs and a few other tunes but I never took him seriously for whatever his current persona was. And I thought his most financially rewarding period, the Thin White Duke, Changes, Fame, Young Americans phase was nothing I cared for.

      I don't think we'll rewrite the calendar around Bowie either! But, I think / hope, we're at a cultural watershed. I don't think this extreme liberalism can hold out much longer. And, I think / hope, there will be a great illiberal backlash soon. I think it is either that or submit to Muslim dominance.

      And, to me Bowie represents that we should not entirely throw out the baby with the bathwater - so to speak. In the heat of our coming militancy, we must not completely lose site of the ideals for which we fight. We are the intelligent civilization, the exploring civilization, the civilization of individual potential.

      As for Bowie's catalog: well, yes, his last great album was, arguably, Scary Monsters, in the early 1980s. But he had a genius run of 15 years. And, many artists and physicists do their best work in their youth. Bowie tried to keep interesting throughout most of his career, and I really like his last stuff. It is not a terrible ding to me that he god more boring as he aged. It happens.

  3. This article needs to address Hebraism as Arnold understands it and Jewish influence as the alt right understands it.

    1. Yes. This is Arnold's nomenclature for a spectrum he identified. He thought the old testament mostly conveyed this rule - bound mode of righteousness - though he referred to other nations as too Hebraic. He had limited commentary, some negative, on Jews in his own time. But, they weren't that important to him, sociologically.

    2. This article, if you read it, sits firmly on the assumption that a large retreat from liberalism, probably violent, is coming. That is about as real as it gets. No?

      But it is also real that we do not stop thinking just because we're at war. We must, at such moments, in fact, better understand our ideals. And, critiquing our culture for being at times too strict and at times too liberal is not a sign of brain atrophy, it is a necessary act of analysis. Providing examples of why we must battle, discussing our civilization's heroes and ideals, builds moral. Morale wins wars.

  5. We should be campaigning to get political terrorists jailed instead of revering male pop singers who shaved their legs. Don't forget Bowie's first tour was financed and promoted by the Daily Mirror and broadcast on TV(no pun intended).Time to jail political terrorists.

I like the overall thesis concerning (if I'm reading correctly) maintaining boundaries vs unlimited individual autonomy but would point out that the Greeks were plenty interested in boundries (i.e., be careful if you cross them) and correct form. Maybe Jews are more interested in this type of approach but gentiles can also read, say, Bacchylides or Ovid's Metamorphoses. Anyway, interesting article.

    1. Yes. He used the Old Testament Jews and Greeks as icons, not as absolutes. And, yes, I love that the Greeks had 'metics' (foreigners) who could not vote. Thanks.

  7. Brilliant article. We are not a simple conservative movement, we represent the return of white identity. This includes artistry and individualism, though this time not at cost of the culture itself.

    Fuck these arm-chair conservative idealists that whine about degeneracy through individuals actions, we are bigger than that, we are about the future of mankind.
    We know if we put our people first the rest will fall into place.
